Somalia Crisis

Islamic Relief Worldwide has launched an urgent appeal for €1.5 million to assist 30,000 people in Puntland and 90,000 people in southern Somalia.

There is an urgent need for plastic sheets, food, clean water, utensils and health services.
 

Islamic Relief Sends $1.6 Million in Aid to Lebanon


                    Continuing its humanitarian efforts in the Middle East, Islamic Relief sent $1.6 million in urgently needed in-kind aid to Lebanon. Working in collaboration with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the groups dispatched 85 tons of essential aid items such as medical supplies, hygiene kits, powdered milk, baby formula, and hand soap to assist the needs of the civilian population.

In addition to the $1.6 million of in-kind aid, Islamic Relief has allocated $1 million of immediate aid for the humanitarian crisis and has launched an international appeal to raise over $5 million.

With over 800,000 citizens displaced and thousands of others seeking shelter and aid in schools and government buildings, the need for humanitarian aid in the Middle East has never been greater.
 
Kashmir Emergency Response


In response to the devastated earthquake in October 2005, Islamic Relief after the successful relief operation started Rehabilitation and Reconstruction of the affected areas in Azad Jammu & Kashmir. Main areas that Islamic Relief is focusing on are; Social Mobilisation, Water & Sanitation, Reconstruction and Rehabilitation of Houses, Sustainable livelihoods development, Health and Disaster preparedness in Districts of Bagh, Poonch, Muzaffarabad and Neelum Valley in AJK.
 

KASHMIR EMERGENCY REHABILITATION AND RECONSTRUCTION PROGRAMME
 

1. WATER & SANITATION   
Beneficiaries:
70,000 People
Objective:
Provision of clean drinking water and sanitation facilities to communities and rehabilitation & reconstruction of Water & sanitation schemes damaged by the earthquake
Major Activities:
• Damage assessment of the water supply projects
• Rehabilitation of damaged water schemes
• Construction of new water supply schemes
• Construction of latrines
• Hygiene Promotion
• Water quality testing
• Hygiene kits

 


2. HEALTH
Union Council (UC) Chillana and Kahori in Dist. Muzaffarabad and Bheri in Dist. Neelum Valley
Beneficiaries:
47,267 People
Objective:
The effect of building Basic Health Units (BHUs) will be the immediate access to primary health facilities and equipment. BHUs are health centers which provide emergency assistance to 90-95% of cases (excluding caesarean sections), outpatient services, maternal and neonatal health services, child care to under 5’s, health education, mental health and TB. BHUs are also the units that collect biostatic data without which health policies can not be derived and in the long term the health services can not be developed. Identification and referral of chronic and communicable diseases are also part of the same subject.

• Furniture and Medical equipment to 3 BHUs in AJK

• Agreement and confirmation of areas agreed

3. EDUCATION
UCs Chatter Domail, Kahori, Chattar Domail and Langarpura in Muzaffarabad Dist. UCs Ashkot and Barian in Neelum Valley UCs Singola and Ali Sojal in Dist. Poonch UCs Dharay, Swanj and Sangal in Dist. Bagh

Objectives:
Immediate access to education for marginalized earthquake affected population. Currently these schools are running under temporary arrangements, tents and shelters. These schools would not merely benefit the presently enrolled students but it will affect to a whole generation.

• Reconstruction of 10 Government Primary Schools and one Girls’ Middle School

4. REHABILITATION AND RECONSTRUCTION OF HOUSES
Union Council Swanj, Nar Sher Ali Khan, Sangal and Hill Surang in District Bagh, AJK

Beneficiaries
86,800 People

Objectives:
• damage assessment survey for houses in 4 union councils of Bagh district
• release compensation payments to eligible house owners as per ERRA guidelines
• provide training to skilled persons and house owners (self builders) in earthquake resistant housing

Major Activities:
• Damage assessment survey in 4 union councils
• Releasing compensation grant to eligible beneficiaries
• Certification and supervision of houses reconstruction work in 4 union councils
• Training of skilled persons and self builders in earthquake resistant techniques
• Rehabilitation and of 52 community physical infrastructures
 

5. SOCIAL MOBILISATION

Beneficiaries:
231,000 People

Objective:
To empower communities in programme areas of Islamic Relief in AJK through social mobilisation in order to combat dependency culture and they can play role in rehabilitation and development activities of their area.

7. SUSTAINABLE LIVELIHOODS

Objective:
• Generate income and employment earning opportunities for deprived sectors of the population.
• Improve the skills of poor and/or marginalised sectors of the population.
• Improve agricultural and livestock practices and productivity and natural resource management.

8. CASH FOR WORK - EXTENDED RESPONSE PROGRAMME

Objective:
The objectives for this project are to provide immediate income earning opportunities to 57652 poor and/ or marginalised sectors of the earthquake affected population through cash for work related activities that rebuild, strengthen and help to mitigate future disasters for the nine months of the project programme.

Major Activities:
• Reconstruction of Retaining walls of cultivable land
• Check damming to protect lands from soil erosion
• Link roads clearance
• Irrigation channels clearance
• Debris clearance/ land levelling of agriculture lands
• Dismantling un-safe houses in Muzaffarabad city
• Debris clearance and recycling in Muzaffarabad city
 

9. INTEGRATED DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME FOR AJK AND BALOCHISTAN
Neelum Valley in AJK, Districts Chaghi and Kharan in Balochistan

Beneficiaries:
149,775 People

Objective:
Overall objective is to rehabilitate and develop the capacity of the targeted communities of AJK and Balochistan by providing them with the means of improving their livelihoods through an integrated developmental approach.

10. BAGH INTEGRATED DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME

Major Activities:
• To provide safe drinking water to the community
• Raising awareness among the communities on hygiene
• Motivating the community on construction of latrines
• Income generation through skill enhancement for male & female
• Orchard establishment
• Grafting
• Pruning
• De-worming and vaccination campaigns
• Forest plantation
• Livestock and poultry management training
 

11. NEELUM VALLEY INTEGRATED DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME
(Health, Water & Sanitation, Sustainable Livelihoods and Disaster Preparedness)

Beneficiaries:
70,737 People

Objective:
The objective of this programme is to provide access to basic health care, water & sanitation, awareness about hygiene issues, sustainable livelihoods and to build the capacity through disaster preparedness activities of the local people to cope with any natural or man-made disaster(s) in the future.

Major Activities:
• Establishing Antenatal and maternity services at the Community Health Centre
• Establishing Diarrhoea clinic for children under 5 <BR.
• Establishing ARI clinic for children under 5
• Forming Community Organisations and providing first aid, management and skills training
• Establishing 8 Emergency Response Units and developing evacuation plans
• Construction of 60 fully functional community managed water supply schemes.
• Construction of 60 demonstrative sanitation latrines.

12. ONE TO ONE ORPHANS SPONSORSHIP
Muzaffarabad

Beneficiaries:
406 Sponsored Orphan Children

Objective:
The programme targets the poorest of the poor; families are targeted and financially helped to allow them to meet their basic necessities. The project aims to fulfill the educational, food, health, and other basic needs of the orphans from earthquake areas of AJK so that they can live a respectable life like children living happily along with their parents.

Major Activities:
• Identification of deserving orphan children for Sponsorship
• Disbursement of sponsorship money
• Medical Treatment of orphan children and their families
• House renovation of sponsored orphans’ families
