Islamic Relief launched a five-year programme; NVIDP in 2001 in order to reduce the vulnerability of people living in one of the poorest areas in AJ&K, which is also, prone to disaster. NVIDP is being implemented through broad-based participatory community organisations and comprises of the following components:

Mountain springs are the main source of water in Neelum Valley, however this backbreaking journey, often undertaken by women, is time consuming and arduous. Four to six hours are consumed daily in this activity. This reduced access to water and time taken to collect it affects the health of the population as well as affecting opportunities related to their livelihoods. This lack of access also affects the standard of environmental sanitation facilities available. Islamic Relief started work in this sector in Neelum Valley at the start of 2002. Kashmir Community Water & Sanitation Programme is being co-financed by the EC.
