On 4th August 2008, flood triggered by heavy rains destroyed many villages in NWFP. A local stream called Thara Khur flowing from Landi Kotal to Charsada caused great destruction in Peshawar District. Islamic Relief team was deployed on ground on the August 10th, 2008 in North West Frontier Province (NWFP) to do preliminary assessment of the after effects of the floods that occurred during this summer. Later on more team members joined for food distribution during the first week of October 2008 among the flood affected people.
Islamic Relief’s initially distributed food packs among 700 families benefiting over 4,900 people in the flood affected areas. Food pack consisted; 7.5 kg rice, 2 kg chickpeas, 2.5 liter cooking oil, 1 kg dates and 2 kg sugar for each family.
Due to the conflict in Bajaur Agency and some other parts of NWFP there are over 200,000 people that have been displaced. Some are at the moment living with host families, majority have moved in to various IDPs camps in Peshawar, Dir, Charsada and Risalpur. Those IDPs living with their host families will be shifted to new IDPs’ camps once established.
Islamic Relief started working on the establishment of New Jelozai IDPs camp in Pabi earlier this month in partnership with UNHCR. However, the work has been stopped due to a land issue. The government of NWFP will provide an alternate land for setting up the camp for IDPs.
People affected by the flood lost their homes and are living in difficult conditions, similarly people living in Bajaur and other parts of the region where conflict has brought huge destruction to their lives have had to leave their villages and towns. These IDPs are facing extremely difficult situation and are in need of desperate help. Islamic Relief staff on the ground is working tirelessly to be able to help those affected by floods and the IDPs who are going through miseries due to the ongoing conflict in the region.
Islamic Relief has established an office in Peshawar that is fully operational to deal with the humanitarian situation in the region.
