Islamic Relief started working in Pakistan in 1992 and was registered in 1994 as a Company Limited by Guarantee under Section 42 of the Companies Ordinance, 1984. Since its inception the office has successfully implemented many relief and development projects in the sectors of Water & Sanitation, Health, Education, Income Generation, Disaster Preparedness & Response and Orphans support in Pakistan and Azad Jammu & Kashmir (AJ&K).

In 2001 Islamic Relief initiated a micro credit project in Naseerabad, Rawalpindi. The aim of the project was to help orphans through provision of credit based on Islamic modes of finance to widows or guardians of orphans. Following an evaluation the eligibility criteria was broadened to include everyone.
 

To provide credit to low income groups so that they can establish a sustainable source of income.

 Below is the year wise summary of the achievements since the start of the project.
During the year 2002, the 83 families have been provided with working capital for new and existing businesses under Murabahah transaction. Total worth of Murabahah Transactions are Rs.845, 602. The below table shows the details of quarter-wise Murabahah transactions.

The target for the year was 150 families and the team managed 135 cases. Among 135, 114 of them were male borrowers and only 21 were female borrowers. The percentage of male borrowers is very high as compare to females because mostly the earning responsibility is on male member of the family and females have domestic responsibilities in our targeted area. So mostly male members manage the businesses and earn the money for their family. Female borrowers are mostly widows or those who have no one else in the family to earn for them for their needs.
